And then this Bear, Pooh Bear, Winnie-the-Pooh, F.O.P. (Friend of Piglet's), R.C. (Rabbit's Companion), P.D. (Pole Discoverer), E.C. and T.F. (Eeyore's Comforter and Tail-finder)--in fact, Pooh himself--said something so clever that Christopher Robin could only look at him with mouth open and eyes staring, wondering if this was really the Bear of Very Little Brain whom he had know and loved so long.

yesterday

was my father's birthday. (happy birthday!) while looking for an appropriate e-card i discovered that, according to the greeting carders, yesterday was also monkey day.
What is monkey day? well, the official website explains it, as does wikipedia. there's even a petition to make it a national holiday.
But... according to the "offical" sources, monkey day is Dec 14! So, apparently, July 21, like so many other "holidays," is a creation of the greeting card industry...

Monkey Day... they're kidding, right? According to their petition, "Monkey Day...celebrate(s) these noble creatures who embody the best of human characteristics such as intelligence, family values, kindness, humor, and compassion"

However, Chimps (which were considered a variety of monkey last I checked) are the ONLY species other than Humans to knowingly, deliberately, kill other chimps (with pre-meditation) for NO REASON (other than fun.)
[I do not have my source text handy, but if someone REALLY wants to know, I could look it up with difficulty. Otherwise, go to wiki, look up chimpanzee, go down to the references and read how many notes reference chimp attacks
Including: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7087194/ ]
Other varieties of monkeys find it amusing to hurl rocks and other heavy objects at small children unprovoked, or otherwise bite and scratch humans who are sitting on their front porch in Africa. While an argument could be made that the humans are invading the monkeys' space by existing in the same territory in the first place, regardless, I see little to celebrate about this 'noble animal'. I am not denigrating them - they are no worse than most other animal species and usually behave better than many humans... but let's not start with Monkey Day just yet... or are we ready for Falsely Maligned Bat Day? House Cat Day? Adorable Panda Day?
